XCELIS® CHAMPION: Dr. Tony Schindler, Regional Application Development Leader
Dr. Tony Schindler's career path began close to home. As he embarked on his undergraduate studies at Northern Michigan University, he saw the construction of a new ethanol plant bring new jobs to his hometown in Wisconsin corn country,
"I saw how important the plant was to the economy there," he recalls. "Along with having a clean source of energy and having diversity in the fuel supply, that made ethanol a very attractive area for me to work in."
That path led to a PhD in bioengineering at Stanford University, where Schindler divided his time between running lab experiments and running data analyses. The cross-disciplinary experience showed him the value of bringing a mix of skills and resources to bear on tough challenges—an approach he brought with him when he joined DuPont in 2013.
"Improving yield for our customers is a hard problem. We should use all the tools we have available to solve it."
"Improving yield for our customers is a hard problem," he says. "We should use all the tools we have available to solve it, whether they come from the applications lab or R&D or engineering or technical services."
Today, Schindler continues to explore new ways to help solve that problem, including exciting possibilities in big data and computer modeling. For him, job satisfaction comes from connecting scientific possibilities to real-world results.
"I want to understand the customer and work with them to solve their problems," he says. "Being able to test our solution against what they're currently using in the lab, make a recommendation, and then see that get turned into a trial that has an impact in the real world—that's really motivating for me."
